I asked:
>If a ferret has adrenal induced anemia, is it possible for Lupron to keep
>the anemia under control?

And Alicia responded:
>> think we utilized Winstrol injections for that!

(FYI, Cedes is about 8 1/2 y.o. and had a bilateral adrenalectomy last July=
(2001). He continued to be symptomatic and we ran the UT panel, which cam=
e back positive for adrenal disease. I opted to try Lupron injections at t=
hat time. He has been having them every 4 months since last December) =

We were using Epogen for Cedes' anemia and it has been under control since =
about April or May. I was discussing this with a vet student on another li=
st, and he thinks that it's possible the Lupron injections (1mg/4 months) C=
edes is receiving is what really brought his PCV back up within normal ran=
ge, not the Epogen.

We did test far enough to diagnose nonregenerative anemia. We never did fi=
nd out the exact cause of it and once the Epogen (?) started working, we di=
dn't pursue it any further. (I believe the next step was going to be a bon=
e marrow biopsy) Now, we're thinking that it was probably induced by the a=
drenal disease and that the Epogen didn't help at all, but probably the Lup=
ron did. =

I would be interested in input on this. Cedes will be having his PCV check=
ed again tomorrow. If the Lupron is keeping his PCV in order, I don't thin=
k we need to do the PCV as frequently as we have. I would like some inform=
ation to provide to my vet. I haven't discussed this with him yet.

BTW, I am going to an entirely different vet now, not the one who prescribe=
d the Epogen.
