I just found and read many web pages on ECE and some of them mention
that new information on ECE is coming out all the time.
Luigi has had on-and-off symptoms of gastric ulcers for several
months and we were currently treating with Biaxin and Amox. During
last night, Luigi had diarrhea that look like classic symptoms of
ECE: Green and slimy. He did not have much energy this morning but
was eager to take 6cc of water from a syringe. I have a vet appointment
this afternoon at 3:30pm. I plan to go home for lunch and offer more
water. It looks like he is also taking water from the water dish
but shows no interest in food. How much water should Luigi be
taking to keep him from getting dehydrated?
I didn't want to offer supplemental food until I had done some
research on the net. Many times when Luigi had refused to eat I
have given him NutraCal. He likes it and he appears to tolerate
the high sugar content. I noticed that NutraCal is not mentioned
as a food to give an ECE patient. Is there a reason for this or
is this an oversight?
Fortunately, he had been eating well until 6:00pm last night. He
completely cleaned his food dish. Does ECE come on this fast? In
less than 12 hours he has gone from normal behavior and eating to
refusing to eat completely, having green slime diarrhea, and sleeping
constantly.
I know when I am taking antibiotics, I frequently get diarrhea
because some "good" bacteria dies in my gut and food doesn't get
digested properly. Could this be the case for Luigi?
One article says the ECE symptoms usually show up from 24-48 hours
of exposure to a new ferret. We did adopt a 2 year old ferret on
30-Sep-02 but that is over a week ago. Since it has been so long,
can we rule out that our new ferret infected Luigi?
What other problems share similar symptoms with ECE?
Any new drugs or treatment that has come out recently?
Thanks for all your help!
