Connie

I just got back from a trip down to Dr. Weiss. I go there for all my
surgeries and I am located in Westchester Co, NY (about 5 hours away).

First, make sure they know you are travelling. They are usually more
accomodating to you if they know you are takin ga 5 hours trip the night
before to see him.
Depending on my schedule and his, I go down either Thursday night/early
Friday AM (if they know you are travelling they can prob. give you an exam
for mid-morning. Surgeries are done after lunch from what I remember.) I
bring them prepared for bloodword and/or surgery so there are no delays.

At his new facility he has temp. controlled ICU units for surgery patients so
all post-ops stay overnight. They are taken care of SO much better than when
I used to have to bring them back to my hotel room and heat duck soup up in
the employee microwave. His new place is just amazing--he has the best of
everything.

If you are going down for one, bring any others you are concerned about too.
He often sees things other vets don't just due to the fact he does so many
more surgeries per week than most vets do a month. Nothing against the other
vets, he just has seen more so he has more to go on. I am convinced he saved
my ferret's life last January when I went down there on a whim with a very
lethargic ferret and an xray that showed nothing. He looked at it for 5
seconds and saw a tumor that my vet didn't see. I stared at the xray for a
while and I wasn't able to see it but he was right. She had a tumor on the
spleen that was making her feel icky.

Since you drop them off in the AM on Friday, you are free until Sat. AM to do
stuff. If you aren't from the area, you can hit all the
museums/malls/monuments in the area. I usually stay in Rockville or
Gaithersburg. I have a list of places I have stayed and where to get the best
prices (priceline is the best if you aren't picky. $35-40 a night at a hilton
or one of the Mariott Suites) if you are interested, send me an email.

Before you leave they give you a price quote and you usually get a call
around 3 or 4pm with an update on the surgery.

When you pick up your little one on Sat. AM, they usually give you the bill.
I admit it is higher than the $300 surgery I got with him a few years ago,
but he is usuing some amazing techniques now. He was just explaining to me
the ventilators and 3 diff. monitors he uses. It is worth it after knowing
the laser surgery is more precise and less painful for th elittle ones

The vet techs are knowledgable and they go over everything with you before
you leave. The sutures dissolve and don't need to be removed. Any blood work
/ post op instructions are printed out and given to you before leaving the
office. If there is follow up bloodwork/etc to be done he says you can fax it
down and he review, etc.

Overall, I have no complaints. If I did have to pick out a negative it would
be the distance I have to travel (they sleep the whole way back anyway) and
the fact he is just so busy now I usually play phone tag with him. Other than
that, I have no other vet (that I have met) I would trust completely with my
ferrets. He really is a great doctor.

Please write if you have any questions--I gushed a little, but I am just so
thankful he saved Keera and I have gotten the best care. It is hard to find
someone like that in NY. I have otehr tips/tricks if you are thinking of
going down to make your trip easier. Feel free to drop me a line if I can
help.

Good luck.
Meg
