If the ferret is exhibiting pain in the ear and will not let you clean it, then it would not hurt to put 'warm compresses' on the affected area. If there is a wax biuld-up or earmites, it would be best to try to GENTLY clean the ear, which can be done by warming an ear cleaning solution and gently clean in the outer ear with a Q-tip, being careful not to poke the ear.
If this is not possible, then with an eye dropper, put some of the warm ear cleaning liquid into the ear and gently massage below the ear canal and then try to dry out the ear with a warm facecloth/cottonball. After hold the warm compresses on the the ear and below the jaw bone, this will loosen any debris and help the ferret be more comfortable until you can get him to a vet!
Usually ear problems are because of debris in the ear causing an infection, so the vet may have to prescibe antibiotics---Angela.
