I don't think there is a positive answer. I've seen the question posted many, many times on the FML (and I had one myself that drank his urine) and there have been a lot of theories, but I don't believe anyone knows for sure why they do this. Some have said they think it's because they're thirsty, which seems the least likely of the reasons. Others have thought that it was something that was being excreted in the urine that made it attractive and others say that it might be related to adrenal disesase and increased hormone levels. Who knows.
Whatever the reason, it doesn't seem to be harmful, though the thought of it makes us cringe.
