Well, our first ferret, Joey, died at 7 months old from a blockage. He got
septic after the surgery, and a few days later they did a second emergency
surgery to try to repair the damage (the sutures in his intestines had
ruptured) and see if they could get his peritonitis under control. If my
memory serves me correctly, we were charged for the first surgery, but not
the second. It *was* tough having a bill left over and no little Joey to
bring back home.
I think we all have to understand, though, that this is how vets make a
living. This vet is a great vet, and they were, I think, generous in not
charging for the second surgery or subsequent re-hospitalization. (They
also made a donation to the vet school program in Manhattan, KS, in his
name, which really surprised and touched me.) However, if they had chosen
to bill me for all costs associated with Joey's care, I think that would
have been completely acceptable and I wouldn't have held it against them.
