Subject: Is it still an adrenal problem?

This past spring or so I wrote about one of my male ferrets, who I would
find every morning on top of one of his cage mates, pinning him down. When
I pried his mouth off & picked him up I could see that he had a very
engorged penis. It was like he was trying to mate. He had been neutered at
10 months old. I asked then if it was a adrenal problem & received feedback
saying that it seemed to be. He had surgery & his left gland was removed &
2/3rds of his right. That leaves him with 1/3rd of a right gland.

Since his surgery he has never stopped pinning that one cage mate, (it is
always the same one) down & apparently trying to mate. His penis gets
engorged, there is a fluid that comes out, there is an odor. Almost every
morning I have to pry his mouth off this other guy. I put him on Melatonin
almost 3 months ago. How long before the Melatonin should start to work?
Does this still sound like a adrenal problem? With only 1/3rd of his right
gland left can it possibly be causing all of this? Should I put him on
Lupron?

If the vet gives me syringes of Lupron are they kept frozen until needed?
If she gives me the bottle if it is kept frozen do you thaw it out every
time you need it or is it better to pre-fill syringes & then freeze them?
The vet is comfortable with me giving the injections.

And one last question. I have 2 ferrets with IBD & the vet said that Imuran
(sp?) has less side effects that pred, is this so? I have heard that it is
a dangerous drug.

Thank you,
Lynn
PS: Thanks Mike, it worked. *S*
