The time of the coat change is regulated mainly by day length but the
coat thickness is definitely affected by average daily temperatures. I
have seen ferrets brought 600 miles south from Scotland in their winter
coats and they never grew as thick winter coats again in southern
England where the average temperature is about 30 degrees higher. Chris
