Just some separate thoughts from personal experience since I'm not a vet:

We have had some with an influenza that is going around. The only
thing that gave them comfort was steam. (I find that using a
clothing steamer is the easiest with them.) This has been going on
long enough that i doubt it is that, though steam may give comfort.
(Be careful to not over-heat one doing this.)

Has your vet discussed the idea of your using plain (no additives of
other meds which can be bad for them) pediatric liquid Benedryl just
in case it is an allergy? (BTW, that will make him tired...)

Certainly, I'd suspect that a fur ball may still be possible.

He's eating a lot of baby food if he is finishing two jars a day; it
could be that on that score he may need to be encouraged back on the
regular food, but I know that if I have a sore throat I'm going to
want to be given soft food till it is down. Is his throat or palate
inflamed?

These are just guesses.
