What you are describing is a splenic infarct. It is not the result of an injury, but a sequela to enlargement of the spleen and local cutoff of the blood supply. Splenic infarcts can result in unexplained fevers, abdominal hemorrhage, and peaks in white blood cell counts, but surgical excision of the spleen is largely curative.
