Hello Ulrike-

we have a few of thesecases each year- you want to withhold food about 12
hours after surgery-- then what I do is offer just a taste at a time of
nutrical (similar to ferretvite) not a lot , a teeny lick at first just
enough to keep the blood sugar up and let the digestive tract know to work--

You do not want to fast a ferret for 48 hours etc as you will get liver/
gall bladder complications which are hard to reverse..

After the ferret freely starts taking water ( still small amounts at a
time) I usually give carafate suspension 4-5 times a day- especially
before offering food- this coats the incision area and protects it from
stomach acid.

I will be happy to give you any pointers I can during the recovery--
Alicia
