Gail,
I just read your post. About three years ago we adopted a little girl who had
been kept in a three tiered cage for a few years being taken out very little.
The cage was only 18x18 with the ramps, toys, litter pan, blankets and all
sorts of other stuff littering the small walking space she had. Her only
movement of any distance was up and down the ramps. When we got her she
couldn't walk more than a few steps and her back end would fall over and
she'd stop and stay in place until she could get herself up and go a couple
more steps. We did all the bloodwork and everything looked good. Little by
little she got a bit better but has never had a real stable back end. She
runs all over the place now, we've had her 3 years, but is still wobbly and
still occasionally stops for a bit. She reminds me of one of those big semi
trucks that if they had to stop quickly, would have the back end of their rig
coming around the side until the back end is right next to the front cab.
It's very difficult for her to walk on slippery surfaces. But she tries! So,
don't be discouraged or worry too much. Thank heavens Sugar's bloodwork looks
good. Ours had just recently developed insulinoma, had the surgery and had a
much harder time recouping because of the bad back end. The catheter was put
into one hip which made it sore of course and having a weak back end made it
harder for her. She couldn't use her backend for 4 days after we got her
home. I slept in a big closet with her so that when she would wake up to go
potty, I could put her in the spot, we used crib protective sheeting for her
to go on, then I would have to wash her off because she would be laying in
her potty, I'd then put her back in her sleeping spot. Needless to say I got
no sleep for 4 days. I stayed there during the day too. So if you have to go
through surgery eventually, just remember yours may experience something
similar. I hope this helps you to not worry. Keep us posted.
Sincerely,
Tiffany, Oscar, Cindy, Slinky (our little semi) and Dad Larry
