I have a question about splenomegally in a ferret.
My friend has a older male ferret, he is about
4 or 5, a late neuter at about 2-3. He recently
started to slow down a lot, and sleep a lot,
first vet check just showed a large spleen,
and started on Clavamox. When there was no
improvement, went to the vet and it seemed
to spleen was enlarging, nothing else found
on exam. An xray seemed to show a spleen
that wrapped itself around, and intestines pushed
off to one side. I took pics of it, but the vet
said it was o.k. The blood tests are below.
Basically the vet said an enlarged spleen can
be from many many reasons, his concern was
a tumor and I think wanted to do an aspirate
or an ultrasound next. In the meantime the
ferret has improved, still has a very large
spleen.

His other medical history are that of dental
problems, he had a tooth removed and
one that abscessed and had to have a drain
put in. That was about 8 months ago,
as far as the teeth, there is one or two
that are being watched ( one is a front
upper canine) , but no swelling
on the face and he eats very very well.

My question is this.
What would be the next step, I am thinking if
ultrasound or aspirate, then to save the money and just
do an exploratory and remove the spleen.
But, is this necessary at all? and when would you
remove the spleen. If we leave it, what are
the chances of rupture or autoinfarction?

Thank you,

Patty
