Patty:
I will give you the thoughts of my vet in a rather non clinical manner
since I have been going through the same thing. My fuzz baby Willy who is
now 5 1/2 years old started to have a large spleen about a year ago. The
vet was not concerned at the time. He said that he saw lots of ferrets with
large spleens as they grew older. He did say at that time that the spleen
can become so enlarged that it can interfere with other organs. My vet said
at the time that if the spleen becomes so enlarged that it can slow down a
ferret, the ferret can become depressed and tend to sleep a lot. My vet
said that it tended to not be a life threatening issue but a quality of life
issue. Well, over the past severql months, Willy has slowed down. He
sleeps all of the time and has lost weight. All tests have been normal. I
really started to get alarmed, particularly with the weight loss, so, today
Willy had his spleen removed. At the same time my vet poked around inside
and took out Willy's right adrenal gland since it "looked abnormal".
Everyhthing else looked normal. I saw Willy about four hours after surgery.
He was standing and eating. When I came in he gave me a little war dance
and a couple of dooks ( they were both kind of pathetic since the anesthesia
was still n his system). He hasen't dooked or war danced in a year. I'll
keep you informed if I see a marked improvement, or lack thereof, over the
next couple of weeks or onths now that the spleen has been removed
