Dear Di:

Part of the workup for an abscess tooth is getting a radiograph of the jawbone - I would not recommend trying to treat it empirically on your own - if there is a large absecess, the tooth probably should be removed so that the abscess can drain.

Another possibility here is a neoplasm of the oral cavity, and your description suggests that if it is a tumor, it is one you need to have seen right away.

Let's not play with this at home, and go to the vet ASAP.

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, DVM

I have Baytril (injectible) on hand and would like to know if it is alright to give him a couple of shots a day to get rid of the infection before I take him to a vet
