Melatonin is a natural hormone that is released by the pineal gland in response to darkness. Since it's felt that ferrets' adrenal problem may be due in part to the extended lighting periods to which they're subjected, we use Melatonin to fool the body by simulating short days. Seems to work in many cases to resolve the symptoms of the over active adrenals, though it doesn't cure the disease.
