Hi Brenda,
As Dr Williams pointed out x-rays and bloodwork
are not always needed. If I take an X-ray before surgery it
is to look at the heart and chest. Sure the spleen may show
up enlarged on the x-ray, but you know that before the x-ray.
Most adrenal glands will not show up on a x-ray. If it is big
enough to show up, it should be big enough to palpate.
The blood glucose is the main thing to check in a young health
ferret, but you check the pancreas during the adrenal surgery
regardless of what the blood glucose level is. Thus in a young
healthy ferret bloodwork and x-rays are optional. If she has an
enlarged vulva then she may also be anemic, but surgery is still
the way to go. If the PCV level is real low then a blood transfusion
may be needed, but that is usually with chronic, sick, worse case
situations.
Hope that helps,
Jerry
