I have a male silver ferret that has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. An
x-ray was taken and it showed a slightly enlarged heart. I am unsure as to his
age since I rescued from animal control on November 12 and they had no
information on him. My vet and I are guessing he is about 5 years of age and
weighs about 2.6 lbs. He is currently on .3 ml of enacard per day. I
understand that the normal heart rate for a ferret is about 200-250/min. With
the enacard, what should his heart be? Should it be slower? We checked his
heart rate the other day and it was about 200/225. This is my first ferret
that has had a heart condition and I am not quite sure what to expect. He
sleeps all the time except to eat and to go to the bathroom. He is quite
content to let me carry him around. Should I be encouraging him to get some
exercise? Occasionally his breathing seems a little raspy. Is that also from
the cardiomyopathy? The x-rays did not show any fluid buildup.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I just want him to have as good
a quality of life as possible for whatever time he has left.

Thank you.
Mary
