Hi all,
My blackeyed white female ferret is loosing hair from the tip of her tail. =
There are also black spots on the skin, that won't wash off. She is a res=
cue so I have no idea how old she is. Internet suggests that this is rat t=
ail caused by stress. I had to leave her for 10 days, so she was under som=
e minor stress. She never left the house and my daughter cared for her, so=
nothing to terrible. Just I wasn't around to play every day. =
Anyone have any idea's about this? How do I get the hair to grow back? In=
ternet says that it will grow back with the next fall coat. Is that right?=
Seems like a long time to me. Anything I can do to stop or slow it down?=
Also, I have to go away for a week in Feb. She and the boys must stay in=
a kennel for that time. If this is caused by stress, is there any way I c=
an help her not be stressed out? I plan to leave thier toys and bedding an=
d a couple of my stinky t-shirts with them.
Thanks in advance,
Shelley

The week before Thanksgiving the FACT shelter took in six ferrets from
the Humane Society. They took in another ferret found outside on
Thanksgiving. Two days after Thanksgiving bloody diarrhea was
discovered all over the shelter room. It was a little girl who was
taken to the vet immediately and put on i.v., but died over the
weekend. Mira was the next victim of bloody diarrhea and taken to the
vet immediately where she stayed for two nights. She began to eat
normally after returning home. To date, no other of the 20 ferrets in
the shelter have been affected. Vanessa of FACT surmises that it only
attacks animals that have compromised immune systems. Both Mira and the
little girl had recent surgeries. This is a severe life-threatening
intestinal virus to those animals that are already weak. Whether this
is some mutated strain of human virus or a new ferret virus remains to
be seen. If anyone else has encountered this illness, please let us
know. Please keep an eye out for any abnormal stools or lack of
appetitie. Quick action seems to be the only cure.
