Just to add to the conversation. I have an 11 year old MF sable ferret who has never had adrenal disease. A matter of fact, she has absolutely nothing wrong with her accept old age. Which doesn't seem to effect her too much. She had surgery once about 8 years ago for a blockage of some rubber material that she got into.
I also had a a male panda ferret who I bought form a private breeder in Pennsylvania who I had altered at 6 months of age. And although he did not have adrenal disease, that we know of, he had an enormously swollen spleen he had removed and then a month later was having a GI bleed and unfortunately died at the hands of a very inexperineced, young, veterinarian. So I was not able to ever find out the real underlying problem. Sebastian was 3 and a half when he died.
And I'm not sure if it means anything or not, but I just thought I would add it. I joke around with my vet telling him that my 11 year old must be from the old "good" stock, and that's why she keeps on ticking.
Just a question because I don't know a whole lot about the breeding of ferrets, just of dogs. At what age are they recommended to be neutered and spayed at? I know for dogs it is six months and that is why I got Sebastian neutered at six months. That allows dogs atleast to develop healthy bones and hormone levels, but hopefully stops the sexual reproduction hormone. Is it the same for ferrets?
Thanks I hope everyone had a great holiday!!
