Dear Megan

I had a ferret with probably the same type of problem. PeeDee had prepucial
adenocarcinoma. We did a PU and it helped him considerably. He did extremely
well with the urethrostomy and he lived more than 2 years after his initial
surgery. We did have to go back 2 more times to remove other tumors, but his
last 14 months were surgery and pain free. We had him put to sleep when the
cancer spread through his lymphatic system.

The only drawback that I know of to a PU is that the shortened urethra can
sometimes be susceptible to infection.

Here is a link to an article that my vet published about the technique in
Exotic DVM magazine.

The picture at the bottom of page 4 is what PeeDee looked like when he was
released to the shelter. I hope that Willie has many fine years to share with
you...and good luck.
