I use a similar method, but I scruff with the left hand.
I use the index finger to push the pill to the back of the throat, then hold the head up and rub the throat. I follow up with treat - usually ferretone or watered down baby food given with a dropper. One of 2 of my really fiesty kids I need someone to help - the helper does the scruffing - but most of them I can pill on my own.
Some of my kids that get daily meds look forward to the treat part enough that even though they don't like the pill, they don't fight. One girl actually comes and begs when she sees me getting the treat and meds ready.
