A great many thing found in multiple organs decrease with age. It is pretty impossible to come to conclusions based upon that alone.
One example of folks doing just that is hormone replacement therapy for women. Now, as a woman on low levels of Estrace I can say that it has its benefits, but as a recent study showed there are some strong health concerns when Progesteron and one of the estrogen compounds is given at certaindoses and in certain ways. Even before that it was known that some of the expected benefits just haven't borne out.
We added CoQ10 to Chopper the Organic Helicopter's meds when she had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and she did manage to be more comfy and more active than the vets thought that she should have been for her level of illness, so it looks like it provided some help.
Aging is a very complex phenomenon and some recent research came to the conclusion that it is the price organisms pay for avoiding malignancies -- that the same mechanisms help prevent the formation and growth of malignancies. Some other research studies the effects of inflammation and how it relates to aging, but at the same time inflammation helps fight disease. There so much more not known about aging compared to what is known that we've all got more questions than answers.
If a treating vet who is used to any individual's particulars says that it might be worth a try to see how using CoQ10 pans out long term then try it. If not, then don't. I'm not near my refs to look up any possible downsides of the compound right now.
Personally, I don't think we're likely to find any compound that is a holy grail.
