Melatonin is a product which the body produces on its own with enough darkness. Light stops or reduces the production. Among low levels blue or green light are especially disruptive, according to studies cited in "Science News". There may also be some better aspects to the melatonin which the body produces on it's own rather than that which has to be taken up in other ways, but that statement is based on some questions raised in things I have read through the years and may no longer apply.
Providing enough of a way to get real darkness is likely at least the equivalent of giving melatonin. It is also easily enough achieved by providing the needed darkness. Sleeping boxes, cage covers, etc. will serve for a great many years.
