I think about a year is the longest carrier length I have heard of,
for me it was about 9months. Since then no new ferrets have
gotten it ( I have taken in about 12 ferrets without any infection- most
were placed and did not stay here, ferret sat 3 ferrets and go to
someone's home with 6 ferrets without a problem)
Since my guys all had it they shouldn't get it
again. So, if you have had ECE wait at least 9 months
after the last one is ill before it is safe to bring in a new
ferret, or bring the ferrets out.
Of course, from experience,
make sure you quarantine any new ferrets for 3 weeks
before introducing them to your own- that gives enough time
to get them two distemper shots for those with unknown history,
and vet checked.
What can happen, is that if the ones that had it got
some intestinal damage from the infection they may get
diarrhea easier than the others or have IBD later on from
the chronic inflammation the ECE left behind. At least that
is the way I understood it.
