Your area has some of the best levels of ferret vets in the nation.
Here are websites from just one of them:
http://www.bradleyhills.com/ and http://www.ferretdoctor.com

ACL surgery in humans is tricky and prone to failure according to
what one side of the family was told last year about an ex-football
player, but I didn't check into it at all myself so that is
second-hand without verifying.

I'd go to a ferret vet for an opinion.

Here are some ways to find ferret vets:

http://www.miamiferret.org/fhc
http://www.smartgroups.com/vault/ferrethealth/FerretVets.htm
http://www.ferretcentral.org
http://www.thepetproject.com/starferrets.html

Others who may be in California can also try these:

http://www.ferretsanonymous.com/medical.html

DO remember to find out what your vet does for emergency situations!
You've got to be ready to jump fast for some things.
