My ferret had adrenal surgery on Monday. We just got
the pathology back and both of them were cancerous,
but because of the way the tumors were on the glands,
most if not all of it was removed :). Anyway, they
left a litle bit of the right adrenal gland, but not
much.

He has not really gained his appetite back yet. He is
on amoxi, pediapred, and Pepcid. We are also going to
be adding carafate today. He basically will eat later
in the day only a little bit snacks, and a very little
food. He will take the food to a corner, drop it, and
then stare at it for a minute, kinda like his stomach
is upset. In the morning, I have to force feed him
(mushed up kibble or chicken baby food). He will be
going on pediapred every other day now for 6 days and
then off of it. We will be doing another blood test
next week to check his electrolyte balance. His stool
looks just OK, not much, but it is brown, but quite a
dark brown, maybe a little green every once in a
while.

Anyway, my question is, how long does it usually take
for the appetite to come back? We do know that the
food moves very slowly through his digestive tract
(there was still kibble in there 10 hours after eating
during surgery, no obstruction)and we are attributing
this to the fact that he had either Helio or ECE at an
earlier age.

Another question, how long does it take for the left
over piece of adrenal gland to kick in? Does it ever
happen that it does not kick in? Anything else that
may be helpful would be appreciated...

Thanks, Judi
