The most recently developed canine distemper vaccine tested in
ferrets -- and which apparently has a greatly reduced risk of
reaction -- is Merial Purevax CD vaccine for ferrets. Thnis is how
we are going for our next set of vax.
The two older CD vaccines folks also use are Fervac D and Galaxy D.
You and the person know about pre-treating with Benedryl, separating
the shots, and waiting no fewer than 30 minutes after the shot in
case of a reaction, right?
I just wanted to let everyone know that even with the new Merial Purevax
there is still a risk of reaction. My ferret Brandy had a reaction to the
Fervac D last year, it was not a severe reaction. This year we pre treated
her with benedryl and used the new Merial Purevax and she had such a severe
reaction she almost did'nt make it, my vet was sure she wouldn't, it was that
bad. She was not normal for a whole week afterwards and for that week I was
still concerned that she might not make it. I put alot of hope in this new
vaccine and I almost lost Brandy. I just wanted to let people know that a
reaction is still very possible with this new vaccine so be prepared for it
to happen if you've had reactions in the past from the older vaccines.
