I just learned this one myself. Prednisone is metabolized by the liver
into prednisolone, which is the form the body actually uses. They are
considered interchangable, though I believe prednisolone may be more
expensive. Prednisolone can be administered in tablet form, while I
get the idea that prednisone only comes in liquid form. (Anybody?
Sukie, got that PDR handy?)
In Bear's case, the doctor prescribed prednisolone specifically because
of his impaired liver function. He didn't want to have to make Bear's
liver work harder to convert the prednisone.
