There has been some recent discussion about bots and west nile -

Bots lay white colored eggs on horse legs, horses lick off the eggs and the
bugs hatch inside of the horses. So, the horses need a de-wormer for
bots. I usually scrape the eggs off with a dull knife. The bots look like
a small bee. I have heard of dogs getting bots, but not cats. The dog
need a small dose of the horse wormer.

There is a west Nile vaccine for horses - on a conditional licence. Yes, I
had my 25-year old Appy mare vaccinated - no side effects. Several
infected crows have been found in my area. Vaccine has not been approved
for other animals.
