Instead of forty-eight hours is it possible that they said four TO
eight hours? The two sound quite similar, but the latter makes sense
for some things while 48 hours does not.

I think that since you are even unsure what is going to be done that
you need to call back and ask for the vet to call you beforehand to
clarify things. Confusion has a tendency to lead to bad feelings so
when it is avoidable that's best. Also knowing what is said will let
you make your best choices.

Personally, I expect that there is possibly a three way confusion
here: among you, the vet's receptionist, and the vet.
