After every surgery my ferrets have had (which have been MANY over the
last 6 years), I feed them "Duck Soup" for as long as it takes for them to
be back on their feet (days to weeks). I make "D.S' by blending (in a
regular people's blender) the following ingredients: 1 can of Ensure Plus -
vanilla, 1 can of AD cat food, 1-2 jars of #1 baby food chicken, 4 tsps of
ferretone, 3-4 ribbons of ferretvite. Meanwhile I have had 8 oz of Totally
Ferret soaking in a large glass of hot water. I then add the Totally Ferret
which has become really mushy into the other ingredients, adding a little
more hot water as space will allow. This mixture will be pretty thick. I
then spoon it into ice cube trays and freeze solid. By running hot water
over the sides of the trays you can pop out cubes of D.S. (don't hit the
D.S. with the hot water). I then put the cubes in a large Ziploc bag and
take out 1-2 at a time to thaw and then warm up to feed. As an alternative
to the ice cube trays, I have also frozen the D.S. in baby food jars so that
I could take a day's supply with me to work (with the recovering ferret, of
course). I feed recovering ferrets about every 3 hours for the first day or
two, then at least every four hours until they are doing well enough that
they're ready to get back on their regular dry food. I just keep spacing out
the D.S. feedings as they feel better and better.
Hope this helps. Mine is only one of many similar recipes for "Duck
Soup."
