Ferrets are usually pretty resistant to the immunosuppressive and other side
effects of long-term prednisone. If you are talking about only 2 weeks of
therapy, this is not long term. Some ferrets on pred do seem to experience
some weight gain and increased appetite, and in these ferrets their bodies
can take on a pear-shaped conformation as they accumulate abdominal fat.
Side effects will also be dependent on how high the dose is.
I haven't had much experience using dexamethasome orally in ferrets. I
usually stick to prednisone. Would have to do some research on why to use
one over the other.

Have a question for those knowlegeable about IBD. My ferret Gizmo got ECE
1 1/4 years ago, that has turned into IBD which has been treated on and off
with dexamethasone when it flares up. It always seems to control it, but
recently he can be finished with a round of dex and within 2 days the
diahrrea is back. I called his vet yasterday and he said to do another
round, and then keep him on the dex every other day from now on. Is long
term steroid use in ferrets dangerous. His dosing protocol is dex 1/4 tablet
twice a day for 1 week then once a day for a week.
Thank you,
