The special microencapsulated granules of leuprolide acetate, which is what
is responsible for the timed slow release of Lupron Depot, were formulated
to be released over a specified amount of time when given intramuscularly.
The drug may still work when given subcutaneously, but since the drug was
made to be given IM, I prefer to stick to the manufacturer's instructions
(not that Lupron is labelled for use in ferrets .. but it makes sense to
adhere as closely as possible to the human labelling information). The
release of the drug when given SQ may not be identical to its release when
given IM, since the tissue esterases that slowly break down the granules may
be different in the subcutaneous tissues as compared to within a muscle
belly.
