I haven't tried it, but like you, I tend to avoid those sorts of things.
Try to avoid fish in his diet (hint - Marshall food has lots of fish), and you will get a lot less litter odor.
We do use Refresh Cage Cleaner and Deodorizer on the cage itself (when they aren't in there), and it seems to do a good job.
Never apologize for asking questions - it's the best way to learn! (And it's why the list is here.) The more knowledge you have about your pets, the better.
