Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Pepto vs. Imodium?

When two of our fuzzies were diagnosed with "bronchitis" during
the summer, they were on Amoxi-drops for almost a month which caused
very runny, discolored stools. Their vet said to try giving some
yogurt (in small amounts) that contained active yogurt cultures. He
said the antibiotics killed off the good bacteria that normally
lives in the bowels and the yogurt would help replace them. After a
few days of vanilla yogurt their stools were normal. He said the
next step would've been 2cc Immodium q 4 hrs. until it stopped. I'm
happy the yogurt worked cause I don't think they would've taken the
immodium willingly and I really didn't feel like being nipped at
trying to give it to them. I know dairy products are not
recommended for ferrets but their vet assured me yogurt in small
amounts (ie teaspoons) were ok for a few days. But please check with
your vet first. This was only my ferrets response to yogurt.
