Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] carafate and ulcer treatment

Hi Becky,
True, carafate does not "cure" a stomach ulcer.
It is a so called ulcer "band aid" to cover the ulcer
prior to food intake. This helps prevent pain and nausea.
Prilosec or other antacids can be giving an hour after
feeding to reduce the amount of stomach acid. This helps
the ulcer heal. IF there is Helicobacter in the stomach then
an antibiotic is needed. Clarithromycin (Biaxin) is the current
antibiotic of choice. Amoxicillin with Flagyl can also be used.
Pepto also helps the ulcer to heal, but it so hard to get into
a ferret that it may do more harm then good.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
