Any animal or person needs an empty tummy prior to surgery, to the
best of my understanding. If there is undigested food, it could
cause them to throw up during surgery. Someone can correct me if I
am wrong.

I don't fast mine for 12 hours. When I am taking one in for surgery
in the morning, I get up about 4 a.m. and feed them soup until they
are full. I know the surgery won't happen until after 9ish so that
gives them plenty of time to digest everything. I know it works
because Doc has checked tummies during surgery and said they were
empty.
