Subject: Fasting

Some vet's don't differentiate fasting times before surgery for
different animals. I don't remove kibble till 2:30 a.m. and I feed a
recipe serving at that time - for morning surgeries. Ferrets that
have insulinoma I do not fast more than 4 hours before surgery. I
tell our vet when each little one had their last feeding. We've had
a couple with food in their stomachs 5 hours after eating (my recipe
REALLY sticks to their ribs....). Hence, my reasoning for the 2:30
a.m. feeding for next morning surgeries. But not everyone is willing
to get up in the middle of the night to remove food or feed recipe.

Personally I think 10-12 hours is much too long to fast a ferret.
What if surgery is delayed? And the ferret won't be able to eat till
several hours after surgery. It becomes much more than a 10 hour
fast, more like 16 hours or more.....

hugs. tle
