Subject: medication and dosages for JC
I have had no luck in finding a ferret knowledgable vet for JC anywhere near
our area. A vet here in town has agreed to treat JC (adrenal & insulinoma)
for us if we could find out which medications to use and the proper dosages.
I have been advised to use 1 mg melatonin mixed with 1/2 tsp. nutrical daily
for the adrenal problems. Is this correct?
As far as the insulinoma...First of all she has never shown ANY symptom of
insulinoma. The only reason we know that she has it is because I was
advised to check her glucose before starting any treatment for the adrenal.
Her glucose level came back "too low to read" on the monitor (meaning it was
below 40).
I was advised to (a)feed her extra protein, (b)make sure she doesn't skip
any meals, and (c)start her on prednisone.
The problems are:
(a)she HATES chicken baby food no matter how much ferrettone you add
(b)we have 4 ferrets--their food is community property in a dish
(c)is pediapred a substitute and if so, how much? and how often?
I was also told that the effectiveness of prednisone diminishes over time.
How will I know when to increase her dose and how much to increase it by?
I realize that this has gotten somewhat lengthy, but I could really use some
advice.
Maybe there is a vet out there who would be willing to consult with my vet
(on the phone, perhaps?).
Please e-mail me directly at renee@n... if you can help at all. Even if
you think someone has already answered my questions please e-mail me anyway.
I'm willing to read thousands of messages if that's what it takes. The more
information I can get, the better JC's chances.
Thank-you,
Renee
