Subject: Re:What to feed a ferret with Insulinoma

There's at least one nationally known ferret vet out there that
recommends Nutrical (similar to Ferretvite) twice a day for ferrets
with Insulinoma. When this vet told me that, I gave Beasley a small
amount with every meal and he lived with insulinoma for 3.5 years.
I'm not saying it was a result of the Nutrical, just that it didn't
seem to cause the sugar spikes that one worries about with
hypoglycemia.

While milk can give ferrets diarrhea, I don't think they're truly
lactose intolerant. It doesn't cause diarrhea in all ferrets and if
given regularly, they seem to adjust to it. I've never used heavy
cream, so I'm not sure about the effect that would have.

As to your question in your previous post about Pediapred... yes,
it's the same as giving prednisone. Typical starting dosages are
around 0.2 mg to 0.5 mg, twice a day. Each ferret is different, so
it's hard to say what a good starting or maintenance dose would be
for JC. It usually won't bring their blood glucose up to normal
levels, so one probably shouldn't keep increasing the amount in an
attempt to achieve those levels.

A/D is a Hill's prescription diet, usually only available at a vet.
I could be wrong but I understand A/D stands for Anorexia Diet.

I've never seen a ferret that hated chicken baby food... at least not
for long. Yes, they may initially act as if you're trying to poison
them, but after a few times, they acquire a taste for it. It helps
to warm it slightly.
