Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] How to decrease potassium/raise sodium
sodium

Thanks Caity!
I was curious about the salt thing--I asked my vet but he said it wouldn't help. But I have read several places about adding salt to addisonian patient's diets (can't remember if it was for humans or animals, but never read anything about ferrets). How much salt do I add? If I give 30 cc of duck soup (just ground kibble soaked and blended well with water), is a pinch of salt too much? Or rather, maybe I should ask, how much salt do you give your bilateral guys? If you add it to the whole chicken gravy recipe, then I'm not sure how to "translate" that into servings...

We have raised her pred and florinef--I think my vet was reluctant to raise them too high but now there is little to lose. She is taking 0.5 cc of florinef (which is 0.03 mg/ml of actual florinef--too tired to do math). Seems high, but I can't find any "maximum" dose of florinef anywhere.

Thanks again!!

Celia

My vet does this by adjusting the pred and florinef levels. He then
checks electrolytes again a week later and fine tunes as needed.

Oh, and he does have us add salt to the chicken gravy we give to our
bilaterals to help keep the sodium level up in the normal range.
