Often distemper will start with what appears to be a bad eye
infection. Nausea and diarrhea are sysptoms that follow, as well as
a crustiness of the paw pads.
I often worry about young ferrets in pet stores, because they have
not had a full set of shots, and therefore may be more susceptible to
distemper.
I am not a vet, and I do not know if the kit did have distemper if
you could have brought it home to your ferret, but since you were
careful to 'clean up' before handling your kids, I wouldn't think
so. Since you say that your ferret's eyes look fine, I would think
whatever is wrong has little to do with the kit at the petstore.
