Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: Vaccine reactions

Hi COnnie-

If you ask me it is related to the fact ( NO I am not a vet or
scientist) that the Rabies vaccine ( administered to ferrets) has
NOT been rated for 3 year vaccination coverage like it is for dogs
and cats.

Each yearly vaccination -- which is required by law BECAUSE the
vaccine companies have not proven the effectiveness with the study--
the titers get higher in the body. It is not a pretty picture to see
blood coming from the mouth of a ferret when the lungs fill with
blood - or from the anus either! Anaphylaxis si tough on any animal
and can leave them with other problems afterwards!

Dogs and cats can get a first year shot annual booster then get a 3
year reprieve-- our ferrets get vaccinated year after year after
year --

UNTIL ferret owners start demanding the companies to test ( and
refuse to vaccinate their pets to death) there will be no changes
in the requirements for ferret vaccinations. I saw the same thing
happen to a 2 year old late altered ferret admitted to the shelter .
He was given rabies vaccs. 8 months apart because records did not
come with him - It took 6 months before the ferret actually started
acting healthy and got a good coat-- it had severe liver problems
after a reaction which the vet had figured was fatal!

It is high time the ferret owning public starts to demand reasonable
vaccination for their pets. Until they do and the companies listen
the laws win and the ferrets lose...

PS- while we do vaccinate - I am always wondering about the
vaccines which are preserved in gentacin -- gentacin can be life
threatening when administered to ferrets-- would repeated exposures
of the gentacin be the cause of not the vaccine--??? It really makes
one wonder! Purevax has it listed on the label!

We also just had a reaction to a rabies vaccination last week.
Butch had a previous reaction two years ago and we started
pretreating him 30 minutes before any shots with injectable
Benedryl at the vet's office.
I know most people say that there is less risk of reaction in the
rabies than the distemper but it seems that there is an increase
in the reactions to the rabies. Is there any reason this seems to
be happening more than it use to be?
Is this reported to anyone other than the maker of the vaccine and
are records kept? Just wondering.
