Subject: update on jill with possible silent heat/protracted estrus

I posted some months ago about a 5 year old intact jill that was loosing
hair. This is a late update on what happened to her:
In March 2001 she commenced a normal estrus, but after just a short time she
suddenly dropped out of estrus spontaneously. This was the first indication
that something was wrong. She never returned to estrus that season and
although she behaved very much like a jill in heat there was no vulvular
swelling at all. After some weeks she began loosing her hair all over the
body until she was almost bald. She also lost a lot of weight.
When fall came her hair grew back and she slowly put on weight. In the end
of December she unexpectedly came into estrus, several months too early (she
lives outdoors and it was still winter). The owner finally took her to the
vet and the jill was spayed. The surgery revealed two large bilateral
ovarian tumours, obviously the cause of her problems. Everything else,
adrenal glands etc, looked normal.

I've just had a similar case with one of my own jills, Astrodoll soon to be
6 years old (same age as the previous jill). Last season she had a somewhat
irregular estrous cycle, not following that of the other jills. A few days
ago she suddenly came into full estrus in just two days (much too early for
the season). Today I had her spayed and it turned out to be bilateral
ovarian tumours. I'm waiting for the pathology report to find out what type
of tumour it is.
I have enclosed a picture of her tumours.

Marie
