Subject: Carafate and Biaxin

The quickest and easiest way to use carafate is to
have a compounding pharmacy make it up for you. It
needs to be shaken well before dispensing each dose,
as it settles out fast, but is quick, easy, and
economical. It also has quite a long shelf life.

The Biaxin is a human medication, and can be obtained
by a prescription from your vet at a Pharmacy. I have
found it to come in a 50 ml or 100 ml size.

Since you dose the Biaxin at 2.0 mls once a day, you
will need 28 mls for the course of treatment. After
being reconstituted, the medication is good for 14
days.

Since the 50 ml bottle is not enough for more than one
ferret (runs around $35.00, here) I have my vet write
the prescription for the 100 ml bottle ($54.00) and
the compounding pharmacist splits the medication into
3 bottles, with a separate bottle of water to
reconstitute them, one bottle at a time, with
instructions on each bottle. I can now treat 3
ferrets, at different times, with the one 100 ml
bottle. (Now costs $18.00 to treat each ferret with
Biaxin, versus $35.00)

While splitting the 100 ml bottle won't be economical
in the long run if you only have one ferret, if you
have many ferrets, you can keep the extra on hand,
should your vet prescribe it later, for another
ferret. This is especially helpful for shelters.

Dr. Williams has the recommended strengths and dosages
for using Biaxin/Amoxy to treat helicobacter in Ferret
Central, I believe (some one correct me if I am
wrong.)

The Amoxy and Biaxin seems to be very well accepted,
produces desired results, and medication times are
much less stressful than other the other recommended
treatment for Helicobacter.
