Subject: Anesthesia for neuter question
I don't know if you guys remember me, but I was on the list in Sept
with questions about my ferret Yoda. Yoda had adernal tumors and was
put to sleep on the table after the doctor conveyed the severity of
his situation.
Well, a month after Yoda's death I received a phone call from a fellow
boxer person who does boxer rescue. A coworker had found a ferret on
the side of the road and she knew zero about ferrets...so I agreed to
take him. We posted signs........noone called..so he's stayed.
All of this time, I've assumed he was neutered since most ferrets are
that way around here. Even my vet didn't notice he wasn't when I took
him in to get his shots.
Well, this week to my shock, I've discovered he's in season...so I am
in the process of finding a vet to do his neuter. I would love to use
the vet that did Yoda's surgery but it is an one and a a half hour
drive so I've located a vet closer who has done ferret neuters before.
I discussed the issue with him this morning and he said they use
ketamine/diazepam combo on anethesia for ferrets. All I have ever
heard is isoflurane.....so I'm a bit nervous until I get more info.
Is this anethesia safe for ferrets? I've looked around on the net
and had no results..
also, can they do the neuter right now......while he is apparently in
rut. (the testicles are very visible and he smells strongly) or do I
need to wait until that is over?
Thanks for any info,
Melissa and Binks
