Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Questions about duck soup

My duck soup has that gritty stuff, too, and Cokie hates it!
I'd love to hear suggestions about getting rid of the grit,
too!!

One thing I have noticed is that Totally Ferret seems to blend
smoother that other kibble.

Here's what I've tried (with limited success!):

I have been grinding her dry kibble in a blender, then sifting
it with a flour sifter to get rid of the bigger chunks, then
mixing it with water and letting it sit for overnight (or a
few hours if I need it sooner), then blending it for awhile
again in the blender. Seems to have the grit no matter how
long I blend.

I tried a coffee grinder set on "espresso", and that
helped--less grit, smaller grit. Still grit. And the coffee
grinder is horrible to clean!! It's a "burr mill" grinder,
and you can't take the grinder out to clean it, you just brush
it off!! But it seems impossible to get all of the food dust
out, so it seems very unhygienic. And the kibble clogs up
fast too.
I'd like to try a different brand (some have removable
grinders), but it's expensive to keep buying new ones! I
think the ones without the burr mill would be pretty similar
to blenders, right? They just have the 2 blades that whir
around whereas the burr mill ones have some kind of wheel that
crushes the kibble.

I also bought a hand held sieve to try to "filter" the food,
too, but haven't tried it yet...

In any case I hope someone out there has more ideas!

First question is: when she gets to the bottom of the bowl
there is a
lot of gritty stuff left over. Am I mixing it wrong or is
that normal?
