Subject: Re: ROOT CANAL vs. EXTRACTION

I don't know about eye problems but I understand a hole (fistula?)
can develop between the oral and nasal cavity with an upper canine
extraction due to the length of the root. I don't know what sort of
complications this would cause.

Penny had her upper right canine extracted over a year ago because of
a reoccuring infection that would swell her right eye shut. There
really was no other choice in the matter. She's doing just fine,
though we tend to call her Elvis because she occasionally does that
Elvis thing with her lip.

Spaz also has a bad upper canine that the vet proclaimed either needs
to come out or have a root canal. Only the tip is broken off, but it
is turning dark. I'm still in a quandry over this one. Penny was
lucky, but perhaps Spaz won't be with an extraction. And, I
understand it takes a couple hours to do root canal and I don't know
if I'm comfortable with him being under for that long. He's
hypoglycemic. I know they can support him via an IV, but it still
makes me nervous. I need to make a decision soon.

I can't see a tooth broken off into the pulp not being painful. They
hide their pain pretty well, so in this case I think I'd be doing
something real soon.
