Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] I am losing Lucy!

Barb

Am sorry to hear about your problem with Lucy. I am not a
vet, but I have been through a similar experience with one of
my ferrets. His name was Trouble and we had him scheduled for
his second adrenal tumor to be removed. The day before his
surgery, he started acting very sick. I called my vet and
brought him in for an exam before surgery. My vet called me
back and said that he was literally bleeding out which meant
that he was bleeding internally. They had no idea why but
immediately hooked him up to an iv and kept him in for
observation. He finally stopped and I then brought in one of
my other ferrets to five him blood.

The only thing I can tell you is to keep your ferret warm
because when they bleed like that they loose their heat. I
wish you the best and please keep us posted.

Sincerely
Ivy

My ferret Lucy, the one who has been having
breathing/wheezing problems
in recent months, has taken a turn for the worse. She has
been pretty
good for a few weeks with the diuretic and prednisone but
then started
wheezing really bad the past day or two. Tonight I went to
scruff her to
give her her medicine and I couldn't get any loose skin. Her
neck was
swelled up and hard as a rock. I immediately put a call in
to the only
emergency vet in this area who works with ferrets. While
waiting for her
to call me back, I noticed that Lucy's throat and chest area
where dark
red like a severe bruise. The vet called back and I rushed
her in. She
thinks Lucy has Lymphoma and is "bleeding out" from
somewhere in her
chest/throat area. She gave her a large dose of prednisone
and Lasix
and basically said to keep her comfortable. She said there
is not much
that can be done. She doesn't even know if Lucy will make it
thru the
night.

Can anyone explain what might be going on here? Is she going
to bleed to
death? Is there anything more that can be done at this
point? How do I
make her more comfortable?
